Pulwama Administration Steps Up Surveillance as Illegal Extraction Continues, 11 Vehicles Seized in Night Raids

Srinagar, Dec 4,: The Pulwama district administration has intensified its crackdown on illegal mining, seizing at least 11 vehicles during a series of late-night enforcement operations across multiple locations in the district, officials said on Thursday.

The seizures were made during coordinated raids conducted by the Geology and Mining Department in the areas of Wuyan, Malangpora, Awantipora and Pastuna in Tral, which have remained under scrutiny over recurring complaints of unauthorised mineral extraction and transportation. The drive targeted tipper trucks and dumpers allegedly engaged in violation of mining regulations.

Senior officials in the district administration said the action was initiated following repeated inputs about rampant illegal mining activity during night hours, often bypassing routine checks. The enforcement teams reportedly intercepted vehicles transporting minerals without valid permits, challans or authorisation.

Officials said a sustained operation has now been put in place with daily and night-based enforcement rosters to prevent mining violations from resurfacing once immediate pressure eases. The administration has also directed joint monitoring with the Revenue Department and the Police to close gaps that allow unauthorised extraction to continue unchecked.

Authorities warned vehicle operators and contractors that mineral transport without proper documentation would lead to strict legal action under prevailing mining laws, including seizure of vehicles and prosecution of offenders. “No leniency will be shown to habitual violators,” an official said.

Locals in affected areas have long complained about environmental damage, deteriorating roads, dust pollution and traffic hazards caused by unregulated mining and heavy vehicle movement, particularly in rural belts.

The administration has urged inhabitants to report suspicious mining activity and unregistered transport vehicles, stating that public vigilance remains critical to dismantling illegal mining networks operating at night.

Officials clarified that further raids are scheduled and transport routes are being mapped to block unauthorised movement of minerals from extraction points. [KNT]
