Jammu :Security agencies on Monday morning foiled a major cross-border narcotic smuggling attempt after recovering two bags of heroin dropped by a Pakistani drone in the R S Pura sector of Jammu. The recovery, valued at over Rs 25 crore in the international market, marked yet another instance of Pakistan-based smugglers using drones to push drugs into Indian territory.
Officials said the Border Security Force (BSF) personnel deployed at Border Outpost Jatinder noticed a Pakistani drone hovering close to the International Border around 6 am. Acting swiftly, a joint search operation was launched by BSF and Jammu and Kashmir Police in the adjoining area.
During the operation, the forces found two bags containing ten packets of heroin weighing approximately 5.3 kilograms. The search operation was still in progress when reports last came in.
According to officials, the swift response by security personnel prevented a major narcotic consignment from reaching its intended handlers within India. “This successful recovery has once again exposed the persistent attempts from across the border to smuggle contraband using drones,” an official said.
Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation to trace the local network that was likely waiting to receive the consignment. The area has since been cordoned off and additional surveillance measures have been put in place to ensure no further cross-border attempts are made. [KNT]
