Advisory issued as Sheshnag Nallah in Betaab Valley crosses highest flood level

Pahalgam, Aug 26: The Sheshnag Nallah in the famous Betaab Valley of Pahalgam has crossed its all-time highest flood level, prompting authorities to issue urgent advisories for the public safety.

According to officials, the water level in the stream has surged to 6.02 ft, surpassing the danger mark of 5.09 ft and even breaching the previous highest flood level of 5.68 ft recorded earlier.

According to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the flood alarm level for the Nallah is 4.59 ft, which has been well exceeded, triggering fears of potential damage in the surrounding areas.

“The water is now flowing at an unprecedented level, and our teams are already on the spot to monitor the situation closely,” an official said.

Authorities have urged residents, tourists and trekkers in the Pahalgam region to exercise extreme caution and stay away from rivers, streams and low-lying areas until the situation normalizes.

The sudden and sharp rise in the water level suggests that a cloudburst or very heavy rainfall in the upper reaches of Sheshnag and its catchment area may have triggered the rise.

However, the officials have been assessing the situation to determine the exact cause and to prevent any untoward incident.

The Betaab Valley, known for its scenic beauty and large tourist footfall, remains under close watch as the gushing waters of the Nallah pose a risk to nearby habitations, orchards and infrastructure.

Authorities have assured that they are fully alert and ready to respond to any emergency—(KNO)
