Police Clarify Misidentification in Athwajan Property Attachment Case

Srinagar: Following recent property attachment proceedings under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in Athwajan, Srinagar, the police have issued a formal clarification to address a case of public misidentification that has led to confusion and unnecessary distress.

The property in question belonged to Manzoor Ahmad Ganie, father of the two alleged accused—Irfan Ahmad Ganie and Ajaz Ahmad Ganie (not to be confused with the unrelated witness of the same name). The attachment was carried out as part of a broader crackdown against narcotics-related activities and was widely publicized in the local area to serve as a strong deterrent message.

During the process, several respected community members voluntarily came forward to witness the legal formalities. Among them was Ajaz Ahmad Ganie, son of Asadullah Ganie, who participated purely in a neutral and law-abiding capacity.

However, in the aftermath of the public announcement and media coverage, police were informed that Ajaz Ahmad Ganie (son of Asadullah Ganie) was being repeatedly contacted and wrongly associated with the accused due to the similarity in names.

Clarifying the matter, a police spokesperson stated:
“Ajaz Ahmad Ganie, son of Asadullah Ganie, has no involvement whatsoever in the NDPS case. His presence at the attachment site was purely voluntary and as a neutral citizen witness. The confusion arising from the similarity in names is regrettable.”
Authorities have advised the general public to refrain from spreading misinformation or drawing unwarranted conclusions regarding the identity and role of the said individual.

The police reiterated their commitment to transparency and fairness in the execution of lawful actions against drug peddling and urged citizens to verify facts before making any assumptions or public statements. [KNT]
