Fresh Rain and Snowfall Disrupt Life Across J&K; Mughal Road, Gurez-Bandipora Highway Shut

Shoukat Sahil

Srinagar, : As forecasted by the Meteorological Department, widespread rain began across both sides of the Pir Panjal tunnel during the night of May 30–31 and continued through Saturday, disrupting daily life across Jammu and Kashmir. Heavy rains in Kashmir’s plains and unexpected snowfall in higher reaches have severed road connectivity on major routes like the historic Mughal Road, while traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway remained operational until the latest reports.

Intermittent rainfall in Srinagar since last night has inundated several low-lying areas, and both rain and snowfall have impacted routine activities across the Valley. Notably, snowfall has been recorded at Peer Ki Gali (2–4 inches), Razdan Top (3 inches), and Sinthan Top (around 2 inches), along with light snowfall in some other mountainous regions.

According to the MeT Department, in the past 24 hours the following rainfall was recorded:

  • Srinagar: 19.3 mm

  • Qazigund: 15.4 mm

  • Pahalgam: 13.2 mm

  • Kupwara: 11.2 mm

  • Gulmarg: 24.6 mm

  • Baramulla: 22.0 mm

A spokesperson from the department stated that light to moderate thundershowers will continue at isolated places across the Valley on May 31, with a possibility of strong winds and heavy spells at some locations. Light showers accompanied by thunder are also expected on June 1 and 2, while June 4 to 6 is likely to remain mostly dry with chances of brief afternoon showers. Similar weather is predicted for June 7 and 8.

The advisory further warned of potential flash floods, landslides, and mudslides in vulnerable areas due to heavy rainfall. Citizens have been urged to stay away from weak structures, electric poles, and old trees during this weather period.

Mughal Road Shut as Precaution After Fresh Snowfall

Traffic has been suspended on the Mughal Road—which connects south Kashmir’s Shopian with the twin districts of Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu—due to fresh snowfall at Peer Ki Gali. Authorities advised commuters to avoid travel until the road is declared safe and reopened.

Gurez-Bandipora Road Closed After Fresh Snowfall at Razdan Pass

Fresh snowfall occurred Saturday morning at Razdan Pass on the Gurez-Bandipora road in north Kashmir. Following this, SDM Gurez issued an advisory suspending traffic movement until further notice, citing safety concerns.

OC BRO Avinash Kumar, responsible for road maintenance, confirmed the closure, stating that “the road is shut due to ongoing snowfall and poor visibility. It will reopen only once the weather improves.”
