Handwara: Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Conference (JKPC) chief and MLA Handwara, Sajad Gani Lone, on Monday strongly criticised the National Conference for failing to ensure the passage of the resolution on the Waqf Amendment Bill, urging the party to replace the current Speaker if they are serious about fulfilling their promises.
“The Speaker is at the pleasure of the incident. He is the Speaker of the National Conference. If the National Conference feels they are making a promise, then they should bring a new Speaker. Otherwise, it reeks of theatre. People will lose their faith in us,” Lone said.
Calling the Waqf Bill a religious matter, Lone said the way it is being handled shows a lack of sincerity. “There is drama in this as well. The Speaker is yours. You bring a new Speaker. We will pass the resolution on the Waqf Bill,” he said.
He also pointed out that the resolution on statehood was allowed to lapse earlier, questioning the seriousness of the legislative process. “Why are we lapsing everything else? Change the Speaker. If all the MCs agree that there should be a resolution, let them get a new Speaker. This is not a big deal.”
Lone further added that the Union Home Minister was aware of the sentiments of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. “He knew what our pain was. He was very sentimental,” he said, underlining the emotional weight the issue carries among the public.(KNS)
