Will oppose Waqf (Amendment) bill inside & outside Parliament: Tanvir Sadiq

Srinagar: National Conference (NC) leader Tanvir Sadiq has expressed strong opposition to the Waqf Amendment Bill, which is set to be tabled in Parliament today despite ‘ongoing concerns raised by Muslim leaders across the country’.

Speaking on the issue as per news agency KINS, Sadiq criticized the government’s disregard for these reservations, stating, “It is a pity that despite the dissent from Muslim leaders and committee members, this bill is still being introduced.”

Sadiq said that the proposed bill undermines the concerns of minorities, pointing out that the new amendment includes provisions that allow ‘non-Muslims to be members of the Waqf Board, a move he argued is not mirrored in Hindu or Sikh boards’.

He also highlighted that the appointment of a collector as the arbitrator could result in ‘biased decisions, as they would likely support the government’.

“Four lakh properties are at risk,” Sadiq continued, referring to the potential implications of the bill. “This is against the interests of Muslims and minorities. We will oppose it both inside and outside Parliament.”

On the issue of the return of Kashmiri Pandits, Sadiq acknowledged the importance of their return to the region, emphasizing that Jammu and Kashmir is incomplete without them.

However, he underscored the importance of providing them with a sense of security and assurance. “It is not just about bringing them back; it’s about creating an environment where they feel safe,” Sadiq added.

He expressed support for the recent efforts to foster inter-community dialogue, noting that the involvement of religious leaders and political organizations is crucial in ensuring the security and integration of Kashmiri Pandits into the region.(KINS)
