Women artisans take lead in Crafting Success

Director Handicrafts & Handloom distributes Share Certificates among artisans

Srinagar: In a significant step towards empowering women artisans in Jammu and Kashmir, Mussarat Islam, Director Handicrafts and Handloom, Kashmir (DHHK), distributed Share Certificates to women owners of Noor Aari Crafts Producer Company in the Noorbagh area of Srinagar.

Established in 2020 under the Jhelum & Tawi Flood Recovery Project (JTFRP), Noor Aari Crafts not only fosters sustainable livelihoods but also highlights the strength and entrepreneurial spirit of women in the region.

The Producer Company was formed as part of a Rehabilitation Project initiated by the J&K Government and supported by the World Bank. It has played a pivotal role in reviving traditional crafts while creating improved market opportunities for artisans. The company is entirely managed by women, serving as a powerful symbol of women’s empowerment in the area.

In his address, Director praised the artisans’ dedication and reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to enhancing opportunities for women in the handicrafts and handloom sectors. “Noor Aari Crafts is an outstanding example of resilience and entrepreneurial spirit. Government is proud to support initiatives that not only safeguard our traditional crafts but also empower women to achieve financial independence and contribute meaningfully to the economy,” he said. He also emphasized the importance of diversifying and modernizing designs to maximize business potential.

The distribution of Share Certificates marked a milestone for the artisans, symbolizing their ownership and active participation in the growth of Noor Aari Crafts. This initiative ensures that women are not just wage earners but also key stakeholders and decision-makers in their enterprises. Through skill development, financial inclusion and improved market access, the administration is strengthening the socio-economic landscape of the region.

The event concluded with a display of Noor Aari Crafts’ exquisite handmade products, showcasing the rich tradition of Kashmiri craftsmanship and the creative flair of its women artisans. This initiative serves as an inspiration for women across Jammu & Kashmir to dream big and realize their full potential.
