Despite Trump’s order travel bans to stay saya Biden

Washington, Despite the orders by outgoing President Donald Trump to lift travel bans for people from the UK, much of EU and Brazil, these will stay in place even as President-elect Joe Biden prepares to take office, a spokeswoman for Biden said on Monday.

According to the order signed by Trump the entry ban would end on 26 January – six days after Mr Biden takes office.

But Mr Biden’s spokeswoman, Jen Psaki, tweeted that now was not the time to be easing travel measures, especially with the discovery of the more contagious variants of the coronavirus.

Mr Biden is due to be inaugurated on Wednesday as the next US president.

The US imposed the restrictions on Europe last March and upon Brazil in May in the wake of the spread of the coronavirus.

“On the advice of our medical team, the administration does not intend to lift these restrictions on 1/26,” tweeted Ms Psaki, immediately after President Trump’s decree was issued.

Following an order last week by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), most air travellers arriving in the US from 26 January will have to provide a negative COVID-19 test report or proof of recovery from the disease to enter the US.
