No compromise on patient care in hospitals; Doctors must treat patients with respect: Health Minister

Srinagar : Jammu and Kashmir Health Minister Sakina Masood Itoo said on Saturday that the government will not tolerate any compromise on patient care in hospitals.

“Patient care is crucial, and we will never allow any compromise on it in hospitals. My recent visit to healthcare facilities was to address the ongoing issues faced by both patients and medical staff,” Sakina Itoo told reporters after visiting Chest Disease Hospital Srinagar, according to the news gathering agency KINS.

Sakina Itoo acknowledged complaints from the public about inadequate services, particularly regarding the availability of hospital beds and the quality of doctor-patient interactions. “The purpose of this visit is to give care to the patients who go to the hospitals. People expect the government to listen to their concerns, and we are here to solve these problems,” she said.

A key issue highlighted during her visit was the shortage of accommodation for patients.

Itoo noted that certain hospitals lacked proper infrastructure, such as lifts and ramps, which made it difficult for sensitive patients to receive care. Additionally, she stressed the importance of positive doctor-patient relationships. “Doctors are intelligent, but patient counseling and a compassionate approach are essential. We need to ensure that doctors treat patients respectfully,” she added.

The Health Minister also addressed concerns regarding private medical practices, describing them as a form of injustice to patients. She assured that the government would investigate and regulate private practices to ensure that healthcare services are delivered fairly and equitably.

Reacting to a recent incident involving a delayed surgery, the Health Minister stated that no compromise would be tolerated when it came to patient care. She confirmed that an inquiry had been initiated, and disciplinary action would be taken against any doctor found guilty of misconduct. “Whether in private or government hospitals, doctors must uphold the highest standards of care,” she said, as per KINS.

The Minister concluded by assuring the public that the government would continue to improve healthcare facilities, including increasing bed availability and providing essential medical supplies. “We will take the necessary steps to ensure people receive the facilities they deserve,” Itoo added.
