Cold wave continue to grip Kashmir valley

Srinagar: Although the night temperature has improved slightly in Kashmir, the cold wave continued.

According to the Meteorological Department, the cold wave is likely to continue in some areas of the valley till December 26. South Kashmir’s Shopian district has been the coldest area in the valley, where the minimum temperature has been recorded as minus 7.3 degrees Celsius, while the night temperature has been recorded at Zojila as minus 25.0 degrees Celsius.

The minimum temperature was recorded in the summer capital Srinagar at minus 3.6 degrees Celsius, where the previous night’s temperature was minus 4.6 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature was recorded in the valley’s famous tourist destination Gulmarg at minus 4.8 degrees Celsius, where the previous night’s temperature was minus 4.6 degrees Celsius.

Pahalgam recorded a low of minus 5.0 degrees Celsius, down from a low of minus 4.9 degrees Celsius last night.

Sonamarg recorded a low of minus 5.1 degrees Celsius. The border district of Kupwara recorded a low of minus 4.3 degrees Celsius, down from a low of minus 4.2 degrees Celsius last night.
Qazigund recorded a low of minus 4.8 degrees Celsius, down from a low of minus 5.2 degrees Celsius last night.

The minimum temperature in Pulwama, Anantnag and Kulgam districts of south Kashmir recorded a low of minus 6.0 degrees Celsius, minus 6.1 degrees Celsius and minus 4.9 degrees Celsius respectively.

The night temperatures in Baramulla and Bandipora districts of north Kashmir were recorded at minus 3.4 degrees Celsius and minus 4.4 degrees Celsius respectively. The minimum temperatures in Budgam and Ganderbal districts of central Kashmir were recorded at minus 4.8 degrees Celsius and minus 4.2 degrees Celsius respectively.

The minimum temperature in Leh district of Ladakh Union Territory was minus 9.2 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature in Kargil district was minus 9.5 degrees Celsius.

According to a Met Official, the weather in the valley will remain cloudy on December 23 with light snowfall at places in the hilly areas. He said that the weather is likely to remain generally dry from December 24 to 26. He said that light rains are expected in the plains of Jammu on December 27 and 28, while light snowfall is expected in the hilly areas of Chenab Valley and Pir Panchal.

He said that later, the weather in the valley is likely to remain generally dry on December 29 and 30. He said that the weather will remain cloudy on December 31 with light snowfall in some places in the mountainous areas, while later, from January 1 to January 3, the weather may be generally cloudy and there is a possibility of light snowfall in some places during this time.
