Environmental Policy Group Exposes Ecological Devastation at Hokersar Wetland

Srinagar: The Environmental Policy Group (EPG) strongly condemns the unabated illegal excavation of soil in the ecologically sensitive Hokersar Wetland, a grave dereliction of duty by the Wildlife Department that threatens the region’s biodiversity and migratory bird habitats.

In a statement, EPG accuses the Wildlife Department of catastrophic mismanagement, alleging that departmental inaction has not only failed to restore critical water levels but has actively facilitated destructive activities that are forcing migratory birds away from their natural habitat.

EPG has been observing a systematic pattern of ecological destruction where the so-called “Mitti Mafia” has been permitted to excavate soil beyond authorized quantities, operating machines and trucks around the clock, which severely disrupts the wetland’s delicate ecological balance. Contractors are reportedly removing unauthorized quantities of soil and creating dump sites that further compromise the wetland’s environmental integrity.

“EPG has taken a serious note of a disturbing incident where one of our members who attempted to document and protest these illegal activities was allegedly threatened by the contractor … of which EPG has recorded evidence.”

The Environmental Policy Group demands a comprehensive high-level inquiry into the “Mitti Scandal”, and a thorough investigation of wetland management funds and strict action against officials and contractors responsible for what they describe as ecological vandalism.

EPG considers The Wildlife Department’s failure to protect Hokersar Wetland is nothing short of ecological betrayal,” We emphasise that the ongoing activities not only violate environmental regulations but directly threaten the survival of migratory birds by disrupting their natural migration and nesting patterns.

EPG has pledged to pursue this matter through legal channels and continue raising awareness about the critical importance of preserving Kashmir’s wetland ecosystems. They are determined to ensure accountability and prevent further destruction of this crucial habitat.
