Srinagar: As the winter chill settles in, the Kashmir Valley, Ladakh, and Jammu regions are experiencing a striking divergence in temperatures.
The sub-zero temperatures in Kashmir and Ladakh contrast sharply with the relatively moderate winter conditions in Jammu, highlighting the diverse climatic realities.
Zojila Pass stood out as the coldest location, with the mercury plunging to a bone-chilling -19.0°C, setting the tone for the icy conditions in higher altitudes. In the Kashmir Valley, mercury settled at -2 degrees Celsius in Srinagar, Shopian and Bandipora recorded freezing lows of -4.5°C and -4.3°C, while the popular tourist destinations of Pahalgam and Gulmarg mirrored the cold at -4.3°C and -3.6°C. The serene beauty of these destinations, covered in a blanket of frost, presented a stark yet mesmerizing picture of winter.
The mildness of Jammu’s winter offered a stark contrast. Jammu city recorded a relatively comfortable low of 8.1°C, while Ramban was unusually warm at 9.4°C. Other parts of the region, including Bhaderwah and Kishtwar, experienced cooler but tolerable temperatures of 0.6°C and 4.0°C, respectively. The hill town of Banihal dipped below freezing at -0.4°C, providing a slight taste of the chill sweeping across higher altitudes.
Meanwhile, Ladakh continued to live up to its reputation for extreme winters. Leh recorded a biting -9.6°C, while other areas likely experienced even harsher conditions, reinforcing the region’s identity as a cold desert. The freezing temperatures transform Ladakh into a breathtaking, snow-clad landscape that attracts adventurers and photographers alike.
The people of Kashmir demonstrate remarkable resilience, adapting to the harsh conditions with high spirits- (News Vibes of India)
