Winter Preparedness in Full Swing in Kashmir: Div Com

“Resource allocation has been optimized for better resilience this year”

Srinagar: Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, V.K. Bidhuri said that the administration has fully geared up for the winter season, with preparations beginning as early as September.

Speaking to the KNS  exclusively, Bidhuri highlighted the proactive approach taken by the administration, with thorough reviews conducted in October to ensure that essential services are maintained throughout the winter months.

Reflecting on previous challenges, Bidhuri noted improvements made in keeping major routes open despite heavy snowfall. “Last year, the Zojila Pass, which would normally be closed for 3-4 months, remained shut for only a month. Similarly, other critical routes like Razdan Top, Farkhiyan Gali, and Sadhna Top were accessible for extended periods,” he said, emphasizing that resource allocation has been optimized for better resilience this year.

In terms of electricity supply, Bidhuri revealed that the administration has secured additional power compared to last year. He advised the public to avoid using crude wires due to fire risks and potential transformer damage. “Areas with smart meters are prioritized for 24×7 electricity as directed by the Chief Minister,” he added, mentioning that around 50 feeders have been designated for this purpose.

The administration is also stocking fuel and essential supplies, with Bidhuri confirming that a seven-month supply of fuel and LPG will be ready by November 15 for remote regions such as Gurrey and Keran. “In snow-bound areas, we’ve already arranged a four-month stockpile,” he said.

Bidhuri assured that heating systems in healthcare facilities have been tested, and 4×4 ambulances will be available in emergencies.

Addressing the issue of water shortages, he explained that dry spells have affected water availability, and water tankers will be deployed as necessary.

“We are committed to delivering services without delay and ensuring that essential infrastructure, including transformers, are promptly replaced,” Bidhuri stated (KNS)
