External Affairs Minister S Jaishanker emphasised the importance of mutual respect and boundaries in international diplomacy, specially between democracies, during a dicussion on India-US relations at Carnegia Endowment office in Washington DC.
When asked about the US leaders commenting on India’s democracy, Jaishanker stated, “You have every right to comment. But I have every right to comment on your comment. So don’t feel bad when I do the same.”
He acknowledged the globalized nature of politics, where countries’ where countries internal matters can have international implications. ” The world is very globalized, as a result. the politics of any country doesn’t necessarily stay within the national boundaries of the country.
“Foreign interference is foreign interference, irrespective of who does it and where it is done,” Jaishankar also addressed pressing global issues viz-a-viz War in Ukraine, Future of Taiwan, prospect of an “Asian NATO”, India’s neighbourhood policy and Government’s relationship with the Indian diaspora.
Jaishankar’s visit to Washington follows last week’s Quad Summit and high-level meetings coinciding with UN General assembly in New York.
