Veteran Actress Maggie Smith Passes Away at 89

Renowned actress Maggie Smith, beloved for her iconic role as Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter franchise, has passed away at 89 yesterday in London. Her illustrious six-decade career earned her numerous accolades.

Smith’s impressive filmography includes two Academy Awards and four Emmy Awards. Her notable roles include Violet Crawley in Downton Abbey, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, and California Suite. She received additional Oscar nominations for Travels With My Aunt, Othello, A Room With a View, and Gosford Park.

Queen Elizabeth II appointed Smith as a Dame in 1989 and later as a member of the Order of Companions of Honor in 2014. Her film credits also include Murder by Death, Sister Act, Hook, and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

In television, Smith won Emmys for Downton Abbey and My House in Umbria. She received nominations for Suddenly Last Summer and David Copperfield, where she acted alongside Daniel Radcliffe.

Maggie Smith’s legacy as one of the finest talents in film and television history will endure through her remarkable body of work.
