Apple’s India Operations to Create Up to 600,000 Jobs by Year-End

Asian Mail

Apple’s expansion in India is expected to generate up to 600,000 jobs by the end of this financial year, as the company reduces its reliance on Chinese production. The Indian workforce for Apple will include 200,000 direct positions by March next year, with women making up about 70% of these roles.

The company’s three contract manufacturers in India – Foxconn, Wistron (now Tata Electronics), and Pegatron – have already created 80,872 direct jobs. Additionally, broader suppliers have added around 84,000 direct jobs, making Apple the largest single creator of blue-collar jobs in India in recent years.

The government estimates that for every direct position in the electronics industry, three additional indirect jobs are created, implying that the Apple ecosystem could generate between 500,000 and 600,000 jobs by the end of March. This exceeds the target of 200,000 direct jobs set by the smartphone production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme introduced in 2020.

Apple’s iPhone production facility in Tamil Nadu, operated by Tata Group, is projected to employ around 50,000 people over time. The company has successfully implemented its China model in India, creating significant employment opportunities and mirroring its approach to building a comprehensive ecosystem.
