Police make arrests in Battergam fire tragedy

Kupwara : A devastating fire broke out in Battergam, Kupwara, on the fateful night of March 3rd and 4th, 2024, reducing a commercial establishment owned by Sanaullah Mir to ashes. Tragically, Mohammad Feroz Alam lost his life in the inferno.

As per the handout issued by the police to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), responding swiftly, the Kupwara Police Station invoked Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) to launch a thorough investigation. Subsequent inquiries unearthed startling revelations, implicating Abrar Ahmad Bhat and Zakir Ahmad Bhat, residents of Battergam and Gulgam respectively, in the deliberate arson.

In light of these findings, the Kupwara Police registered a case (FIR No. 54/2024) under pertinent sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) including 302, 436, 420, and 120B. Despite attempting to evade justice by seeking refuge in Punjab, both suspects were apprehended and brought back to face the consequences of their actions.

The handout mentions that during interrogation, the accused confessed to igniting the fire with the nefarious intent of defrauding insurance companies.

“Under the leadership of Inspector Ishaq, and the supervision of Deputy Superintendent of Police Headquarters, Kupwara, the police force remains steadfast in uncovering the truth behind this heinous act, ” reads the police statement.
