Srinagar sizzles at 35.0°C, breaks 18-year-old records

Srinagar, June 23 :  Srinagar sizzles in extreme heat as the temperature soars to 35.0°C breaking the 18-year-old record on Friday, officials said.

Respite from the current sweltering heat wave likely to ease from June 24 onwards, MeT office said.

Srinagar recorded 35.0°C against 34.8°C the previous day and it was 5.8°C above normal for the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday in 18 years.

The previous maximum temperature for Srinagar was recorded at 35°C on June 3, 2018, they said. On June 24, 2005, the maximum temperature was recorded at 36.5°C, while the highest temperature ever recorded in June occurred on June 29, 1978, with a reading of 37.8°C.

The all-time highest maximum temperature of Srinagar was recorded at 37.8°C on June 29, 1978, they added. Qazigund, on Srinagar-Jammu national high, recorded 34.2°C against 34.6°C, Pahalgam recorded at 30.2°C against 29.3°C while Kokernag had 33.3°C against 32.7°C the previous day. Gulmarg recorded 25.0°C against 26.0°C and Kupwara recorded 33.5°C against 33.7°C today, the MeT office said.

The MeT forecast is generally cloudy with light rain or thunderstorm at scattered places of Jammu and few places of Kashmir Division on June 24 and the weather generally remains cloudy with intermittent light to moderate thundershower at many places from June 25-28.

Few places over Jammu Division may receive intense showers for a short period, the MeT office said.
