COVID-19: Newspapers not to hit stands from Wed in Kashmir

Srinagar, Mar 31:

People in Kashmir valley will have to suffice with online editions of media houses as newspapers will not hit the stands from Wednesday following distributors deciding to stop distribution and delivery to subscribers in view of upward spiral of Coronavirus cases.
Meanwhile, a gag on high speed internet continued in Kashmir since August 5, when the Centre scrapped Article 370 and Article 35, besides bifurcating J&K into two Union Territories.

A spokesperson for the Newspaper Distribution Association (NDA) told UNI that the body has decided to stop the distribution and delivery of newspapers to the subscribers from April 1, 2020.

He said that the decision was taken in view of difficulties being faced by hawkers in the home delivery and distribution of Newspapers/Journals to their respective subscribers/readers due the outbreak of COVID-19.

“Since, Coronavirus has gripped the whole world and continues to take toll of precious human lives, the members of the NDA have asked the News Agencies and their hawkers not to touch newspapers and stay at their respective residences,” he said.

He said no doubt this decision shall have far reaching consequences on the Media Houses in Kashmir Valley.

Six more persons, including a 10-year-old boy, were on Tuesday tested positive for Coronavirus in Kashmir valley, taking the total number of infected people to 55 in J&K. UNI
