LS adopts resolution imposing 200 pc customs duty on Pakistani goods

New Delhi,:  The Lok Sabha on Monday passed a resolution approving the notification seeking to amend the First Schedule of the Customs Tariff Act which prescribes 200 per cent customs duty on all goods originating in or exported from Pakistan.
Minister of State for Finance Anurag Thakur moved the resolution in pursuance of section 8A(1) of the Customs Tariff Act, and the House approved the government notification of February 16, 2019 that imposes 200 per cent customs duty on all goods originating in or exported from Pakistan.
The Cabinet Committee on Security, presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 15, a day after Pulwama attack, had decided to withdraw Most Favoured Nation status (MFN) given to Pakistan for trade ties.
India increased basic custom duty to 200 per cent on all goods exported from Pakistan with effect from February 16.
It may be recalled the then Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had said, “India has withdrawn MFN status to Pakistan after the Pulwama incident. Upon withdrawal, basic customs duty on all goods exported from Pakistan to India has been raised to 200 per cent with immediate effect.”
