Amid Alleged Rift, PDP Vice President Ganderbal & Late Qazi Afzal’s Son Resigns

Srinagar, Oct 13 : Amid alleged rift over recent appointments by PDP in Ganderbal district, Qazi Umar Farooq son of the party’s late senior leader and Minister Mohammad Afzal Qazi has tendered his resignation “only to be available as common voter” of the central Kashmir district.

In a letter to party president Mehbooba Mufti, GNS has learnt that Qazi Umar has stated he resigns “immediately as vice president Ganderbal.”

“I will be only available as a common voter of Ganderbal,” he is said to have communicated to the party president.

While no reason has been attributed in the brief resignation letter, sources told GNS that recent appointments triggered the resignation. “It depicts all is not well in the party unit of Ganderbal and undue interference by some former minister(s) has created dismay among the most of the rank and file in the party unit.”

In recent meetings, the alleged rift in the party came to fore, sources said.

They said that on September 25 at the residence of late party leader Qazi Afzal’s residence which was presided by Wahid Ahmad Dar in which district vice president Qazi Umar Farooq and former district president Bashir Ahmad Mir and some other party leaders attended meeting. However, they said, the group headed by former zone president Zahoor Ahmad Rather and Bilal Ahmad Sheikh abstained.

On October 7, they said, another meeting was called by the “another group” headed by Bilal Ahmad Sheikh and Zahoor Ahmad Rather in which district coordinator and district vice president Ganderbal were allegedly not invited. The rift has come to open largely after October 8 when PDP nominated Zahoor Ahmad Rather as district president Ganderbal.
