Postal services in Sri Lanka limited to thrice a week amid fuel crisis

Colombo, June 29 :Amid the ongoing fuel shortage in the country, Sri Lanka’s postal department announced that it will be operating its open post and sub ports offices only three days a week, considering the difficulties being faced in transport and travelling, Khaleej Times reported on Wednesday.


Accordingly, the services by the main and sub-offices will be available on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, reports said.


Meanwhile, Indian Oil’s subsidiary in Sri Lanka, Lanka IOC (Indian Oil Corporation) announced the restriction in the sale of petrol to a maximum of Rs7,000 for four-wheelers, with immediate effect.
“Lanka IOC with immediate effect restricts sales of Petrol as follows:: 2 Wheelers: Rs.1500/- 3 Wheelers: Rs.2500/- 4 Wheelers: Rs.7000/- Inconvenience caused is deeply regretted,” tweeted Lanka IOC PLC.


Lanka IOC is the only private oil company that operates retail petrol and diesel stations in Sri Lanka.
Due to the rapid decline in fuel supply, the Sri Lanka government has restricted issuing fuel to private vehicles and announced providing fuel only for essential services from Monday night.
Sri Lanka’s Cabinet spokesman Bandula Gunawardena said, that a mechanism to provide a continuous supply of LP gas and fuel would be in place after July 10.


The Sri Lankan Cabinet on Tuesday granted to open fuel imports and retail sales market to companies from oil-exporting nations after the country ran out of fuel as only 1,100 tonnes of petrol and 7,500 tonnes of diesel are left, which are not sufficient to last for a day.
