World Glaucoma week observed at GMC&AH Rajouri

Rajouri, Mar 12: In connection with the World Glaucoma Week , an awareness and screening program on Glaucoma was today  held here at Associated Hospital GMC Rajouri under National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment (NPCBVI).

Medical Superintendent Dr. Mehmood Hussain Bajar, while speaking on the subject, informed that a large number of patients have been screened to rule out Glaucoma and other causes of blindness during the week long campaign.

He said the week is a global initiative of the World Glaucoma Association (WGA) that puts a spotlight on glaucoma as the leading cause of preventable irreversible blindness worldwide.

To mark World Glaucoma Week (6th -12th March), the Associated Hospital GMC Rajouri is highlighting the importance of early detection in slowing the progression of glaucoma and that regular eye tests are the only way to detect ‘symptomless’ glaucoma early. At a late stage glaucoma is irreversible and results in sight loss and blindness.

He also informed that 662 surgeries have been performed by the Ophthalmology Department since April 2021 to date under the National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment (NPCBVI).

The Medical Superintendent appreciated the efforts of Ophthalmologists Dr. Shazia Qayoom (Assistant Professor), Dr. Jyoti Katoch (A Grade Consultant), Dr. Rajeev Sharma (B Grade Consultant) and team of the Ophthalmology department of the hospital.
