Curfew continues in Hailakandi district of Assam

Guwahati,  :Curfew remained clamped in Hailakandi district of southern Assam for the second day today as tension simmered following yesterday’s clashes in the headquarter town of Hailakandi, in which one person was killed and several others injured.
Official sources from Hailakandi said one of the person injured in the clashes had succumbed at hospital last night.
Post-mortem of the body has been conducted and it will be handed to the family members later today.
Several other persons were still undergoing treatment at different hospitals, while public and private property, including vehicles, was also damaged in the clashes.
Tension continued to simmer in the district following yesterday’s clashes in front of a mosque in Hailakandi town.
The sources said Army and central para-military forces, including Assam Rifles and CRPF, have been deployed to assist the police in maintaining law and order.
Curfew, which was initially imposed in Hailakandi town yesterday and later extended to the entire district, will remain in force till 0700 hours tomorrow, when it will be reviewed.
Reports of mobs gathering in different places in the district have been received, but prompt action by the administration has ensured no further flare-up yet.
Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Hailakandi deputy commissioner Keerthi Jalli have appealed for peace and urged the people to maintain law and order.
Peace committee meetings have also been planned by the district administration, while state Cabinet Minister Parimal Suklabaidya has been deputed by the CM to take stock of the situation.
Top state government officials, including additional chief secretary Rajiv Bora, additional director general of police Mukesh Agarwal and Commissioner of Barak Valley Region Anuwaruddin Choudhury, have rushed to Hailakandi to review the situation.
The clashes had erupted between two factions near a mosque in Hailakandi town following a row during namaz yesterday noon.
