Highway Partially Restored, Kashmir-Bound Trucks Cross Navayug Tunnel

Srinagar, Feb 24 : Traffic on Jammu-Srinagar highway, the only surface link connecting Kashmir with the outside world, has been partially restored, officials said on Thursday.

“The thoroughfare from Udhampur to Banihal is through, except for some stretches where only one way movement is possible,” a traffic department official here told GNS.

He said all the stranded Kashmir bound trucks have crossed Navayug tunnel.

“The movement remained slow due to slippery road conditions between Navayug Tunnel and Qazigund, which delayed the clearance to some extent,” the official said, adding, “Presently, movement of LMVs is allowed. The trucks from Qazigund will be allowed later in the afternoon, if there is no further disruption.”

The authorities have already announced that fresh vehicular movement on the highway shall remain suspended today.

“People are requested not to undertake any journey on Jammu- Srinagar thoroughfare on Thursday,” the traffic department had said in a statement. The thoroughfare was closed early morning on Wednesday and many vehicles including trucks bound for Srinagar were stranded in Ramban and other places en-route it.

Meanwhile, Mughal Road, connecting Shopian with Poonch and Rajouri districts, remained closed for vehicular movement in view of snow accumulation at Peer Ki Gali.

Also,Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri road remained shut for vehicular movement in view of snow accumulation on Zoji la axis and has been closed till further orders. Kishtwar-Sinthan road also remained closed in view of snow accumulation, the traffic department official said.
