Cold wave sweeps Kashmir valley, Ladakh

Srinagar, Jan 12: Cold wave conditions intensified in Kashmir valley and Ladakh with temperature plummeting all across the twin Union Territories as Srinagar recorded a low of minus 3.6 degree Celsius and Pahalgam minus 11.6 degree Celsius while Drass plunged to minus 27.7 degree Celsius on Wednesday.

A Meteorological Department official said that Srinagar, the summer capital of Kashmir, recorded a low temperature of minus 3.6 degree Celsius against the 0.2 degree Celsius recorded the previous day which was minus 1.5 degree below normal during this time of the season, he said.

The famous ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir dipped to minus 11.5 degree Celsius against the minus 10.6 degree Celsius recorded on Tuesday which is minus 3.6 degree below normal during this period of the season.

Pahalgam, the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir plunged to minus 11.6 degree Celsius against the minus 10.4 degree Celsius recorded on the previous night, he said.

Qazigund on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway slipped to a low of minus 5.3 degree Celsius against the minus 0.6 degree Celsius on the previous night, he said.

Kukernag, also in south Kashmir dipped to minus 7.2 degree Celsius against the minus 1.7 degree Celsius recorded on Tuesday which was minus 3.6 degree below normal during this time of the season.


Kupwara town in north Kashmir recorded a low of minus 5.5 degree Celsius against the minus 3.0 degree Celsius recorded on Tuesday,.

Leh in Ladakh recorded a low of minus 13.1 degree Celsius against the minus 12.6 degree Celsius on Tuesday, while the mercury at the automatic station in Kargil plummeted to minus 14.7 degree Celsius against the minus 11.3 degree Celsius recorded a day ago and Drass the world’s second coldest place after Siberia recorded a low of minus 27.7 degree Celsius against minus 24.2 degree Celsius a day before, the official said.
