Kashmir, Ladakh may see snowfall

Srinagar, Dec 24 : A western disturbance is likely to hit the Kashmir Valley and Ladakh during December 26 to 28, triggering light to moderate snowfall in the plains and moderate snow in the higher reaches, the Meteorological Department said.

Two to three inches of snow is expected in the plains of Kashmir and 1-2 feet of snow at isolated places in the higher reaches of Zojila-Minamarg axis.

Light snowfall can lash Ladakh, especially Kargil-Zanaskar area. Light to moderate rains with thunderstorms were likely during the period.

Barring the tourist destinations of Gulmarg and Pahalgam, the minimum temperature settled in the Kashmir Valley above freezing point on Friday.

Srinagar, the summer capital, saw a low of 2.4 degrees Celsius against 2.6 the previous night. A rainfall of 1.3 mm was recorded.

The mercury in the ski resort of Gulmarg in the north Kashmir district of Baramulla settled at minus 5.1 degrees Celsius against minus 3.7 degree Celsius a day earlier. It was 0.7 degrees Celsius above normal which also received 3.3 cm of fresh snowfall.

Pahalgam in south Kashmir recorded a low of minus 1.3 degree Celsius. Qazigund on Srinagar-Jammu national highway had a low of 1.2 degree Celsius.

Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, recorded a low of 1.2 degree Celsius and had a rainfall of 5.2 mm.

Kupwara saw a minimum of 2.2 degrees Celsius against 2.6 the previous day, the MeT office said.
