Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha adjourned sine die

New Delhi, Dec 22 : Lok Sabha was adjourned sine die on Wednesday, a day ahead of schedule.

Speaker Om Birla said the House had an overall productivity of 82 percent. Government introduced 12 bills, out of which nine bills were passed.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and Congress President Sonia Gandhi were among members present in the House at the time.

The winter session started on November 29.

Rajya Sabha adjourned sine die, Chairman says House functioned ‘much below potential’

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned sine die within a few minutes after it met on Wednesday, with Chairman Venkaiah Naidu saying the House had functioned “much below its potential” during the Winter Session.

After the various ministers had tabled the reports listed against their names, Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge tried to raise an issue by citing a report in a leading daily.

However, Chairman Naidu did not allow it, saying that newspapers cannot be read in the House, and he has to give proper notice.

The Chairman then announced adjournment of the session.

He said the House had functioned “much below its potential” in the Winter Session, that was marred by vociferous Opposition protests over the suspension of 12 members for the entire session, among other issues.

Chairman Naidu said he has taken a “very critical view” of the way the House functioned.

He said there should be realisation that what transpired in the House “is wrong” and that members should work towards constructive functioning of the House, and observe rulings, regulations, proceedings, and observe decorum.

He wished members for the upcoming festival season.

After the national song was played, he announced the adjournment of the House sine die.

The adjournment of the session comes a day after the House passed the Election Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2021, amid strong protests and a walkout by the Opposition. TMC member Derek O’Brien was also suspended for the rest of the session for throwing the rule book towards the Chair.
