J&K: Need to develop coordination and alliance between various trekking and mountaineering clubs

Srinagar, Dec 18: There is a need to develop coordination and alliance between various trekking and mountaineering clubs of the Valley for adventure sports activities, a statement said here on Saturday.


This was stressed by various speakers during a function at north Kashmir’s Sopore sub district to observe the International Mountain Day.

The event was organised by Peaks Alpine Adventure Club, Sopore wherein the representatives of various trekking clubs were also present, a statement said.

While highlight the importance of mountain day, Jamsheed Khan General Secretary of Peaks Alpine Adventure Club Sopore said that there is a need to introduce and encourage the youth of the valley towards outdoor activities like trekking, hiking, rafting etc so as to inculcate a sense of love towards nature among them. He also suggested that there is a need to have a climbing wall in North Kashmir so that the youth who want to take rock climbing as a sport can get hands-on training.

Ishfaq Tantry, senior journalist who is also the member of Varmul Trekking Club while highlighting different activities of the club suggested for having an alliance between the trekking clubs so as to facilitate hassle free trekking expeditions and to gain from the experience of various trekkers.

He also said that there is a need to have a complete written guide of all the famous and not so famous trekking routes of Kashmir.

Manager of Cliffhangers India Arif in his address explained how youth can also choose mountain guiding as a career. He said it is one of the highest paid jobs in Europe.

Rock climber Junaid Beigh while highlighting his achievements that respect for nature and professionalism are the two traits which a mountaineer needs to be developed.

The Chief guest on the occasion Mahmood Shah, an avid trekkers and Director, Industries and Commerce, Kashmir said Kashmir has the best places for adventure sport.

Shah who is also the President of Jammu and Kashmir Mountaineering and Hiking Club said they were open to alliances among various clubs.

Others who spoke included Rouf Trumboo, Javiad Anim and Mubarak Gul.
