J&K: Shopkeepers observe shutdown against SMC

Srinagar, Dec 17: Shops and business establishments observed a shutdown at the Hari Singh High Street market in protest against the removal of alleged encroachments by the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) from the city area on Friday.
All shops and business establishments in the area downed their shutters and their owners staged a protest, calling the removal of encroachments as “arbitrary”.

SMC removed illegal pavement hawkers on Thursday evening, enraging the shopkeepers and vendors.

SMC Commissioner Aamir Athar Khan had recently urged shopkeepers in Jahangir Chowk and adjacent areas to remove additional encroachments or face the consequences.

Srinagar Deputy Commissioner Aijaz Asad had also told shopkeepers and vendors to remove encroachments saying it was choking traffic and pedestrian movement.
