Centre sanctions Rs 74,485cr for NE development projects: Min Vaishnaw

New Delhi, Dec 15:Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday said the Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre has sanctioned Rs 74,485 crore for development projects in the North East so far.

“Between 2009-14 (under the previous govt) only Rs 2,122 cr per year was allocated.

“Now it’s 7,292 cr is sanctioned per year,” said Vaishnaw in reply to a supplementary question in the Lok Sabha, during the question hour.

On survey and investigation status of various projects, including Bhalukpong-Tawang, being carried out by the railways in Arunachal Pradesh, Union Railway Minister Vaishnaw said: “The projects are very important as it has strategic importance because it connects the border areas. Working is going on pace.” It was in response to BJP MP from Arunachal East Tapir Gao’s query.

The final location survey of these project are going on, he informed the House. The frontier state shares a 1,080 km boundary with China.

In a reply to another supplementary question asked by Mizo National Front (MNF) MP from Mizoram, C Lalrosanga on rail connectivity in the state, Vaishnaw said: “So far 51.4 km railway line has been approved in the state of Mizoram which will connect Bairabi to Sairang.

“It will connect the capital of Aizwal to the rest of the country with railway network. The project is worth 6,547 crore.”

Since 2014, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi government has given special focus on connectivity in the NE region.

In Arunachal Pradesh, the work on Greenfield Airport at Hollongi, near state capital Itanagar, is going on war footing and it will be completed by August 2022.
