Temperature improves due to cloudy sky, freezing conditions prevail in Kashmir, Ladakh

Srinagar, Dec 14 : There was an over all improvement in the night temperature due to cloudy sky with no respite from the freezing cold condition that continued to hover over Kashmir valley and Ladakh Union Territories on Tuesday.

A Meteorological Department said, weather is most likely to remain with partly to generally cloudy conditions during the next 48 hours in Jammu and Kashmir and there is the possibility of light to moderate snow over the higher reaches of north and north west of Kashmir.

He said very light rain or snow might occur at scattered places in the plains of Kashmir with chances of 50 per cent from tonight. There is no forecast of any major rain or snow till December 23. The temperature may dip further to minus 5 to minus 6 in Srinagar during the month of December which was normal, the MET office said.

Meanwhile, temperature in Srinagar improved due to cloud cover and it was recorded at minus 2.6 degree Celsius against minus 3.5 degree Celsius a day ago. However, the freezing cold conditions coupled with fog continue to prevail making life miserable for the inhabitants.

Drass, the second coldest place in the world after Siberia, showed an improvement of 6 degrees and recorded temperatures at minus 10.0 degree Celsius against the 16.2 degree Celsius on Monday.

The temperature in the ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir has shown a further dip tot minus 5.6 degree Celsius against the minus 5.0 against a day ago.

Tourist resort of Pahalgam in south Kashmir also showed an improvement and was recorded at minus 2.8 degree Celsius against minus 5.3 degree Celsius recorded the previous day, an improvement of 2.5 degrees.

Qazigund on Srinagar Jammu national highway recorded at minus 2.6 degree Celsius as against minus 2.8 degree Celsius a day ago. Similarly at Kokernag it was recorded at minus 2.3 degree Celsius as against minus 3.5 degree Monday.

The temperature at frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara was recorded as minus 3.5 degree Celsius against the minus 4.2 degree Celsius on Sunday.

Leh was recorded temperatures at minus 7.6 degree Celsius against minus 13.7 degree Celsius an overall improvement of 6 degrees the previous day and at Kargil temperatures plummetted to minus 8.9 degrees Celsius against the minus 6.0 degree Celsius the previous, the MET office said.
