SC reserves order on Zakia Jafri’s plea in Godhra case

SC reserves order on Zakia Jafri's plea in Godhra case

New Delhi, Dec 9: The Supreme Court on Thursday reserved its verdict on the Zakia Ahsan Jafri petition that sought fresh probe into the 2002 post-Godhra Gujarat riots alleging larger conspiracy involving politicians and police.

A three-judge bench of the apex court headed by Justice AM Khanwilkar reserved the judgement after hearing a detailed argument from Jafri, SIT and others.

Zakia, the wife of slain MP Ehsan Jafri, had moved the Supreme Court challenging the clean chit by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to then Gujarat Chief Minister, Narendra Modi, in the riots cases.

Raising a number of questions on the manner in which the SIT had probed these riots cases in Gujarat, Kapil Sibal, senior lawyer for Zakia Jafri, questioned the SIT’s action “despite all kinds of evidences and documents against all the accused persons in these riot cases in Gujarat”.

Senior lawyer and former Attorney General (AG) of India, Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for the SIT, maintained that the probe team had conducted its investigation in a detailed manner and refuted the allegations by Sibal that the SIT failed in its duty to investigate the accused persons role in the Gujarat riots cases.

A three-judge bench led by Justice Khanwilkar has been hearing the case.
