Myanmar's ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi sentenced to 4 years prison

Naypyitaw, Dec 6 : Nobel Peace Prize winner and Myanmar’s former leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been sentenced to four years jail term over charges of inciting dissent against the junta government and breaking Covid-19 rules.

According to BBC news, Suu Kyi was found guilty by a Myanmar court on charges of inciting dissent and breaking Covid rules under a natural disasters law.

At present, she faces 11 charges in total, which she has denied.

Meanwhile, Win Myint, the former president and an ally of Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) party, was also sentenced to four years prison under the same charges.

The order has been widely condemned.

“The harsh sentences handed down to Aung San Suu Kyi on these bogus charges are the latest example of the military’s determination to eliminate all opposition and suffocate freedoms in Myanmar,” said Amnesty deputy regional director for Campaigns Ming Yu Hah in a statement.

This is the first in a series of verdicts that could jail her for life, BBC reported.

In 2020, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi had won the election by a large margin but the military refused to recognise the poll results.

On February 1, the military staged a coup and since then more than 1,000 civilians have been killed, which led to armed rebellions.
