India to host 90th Interpol General Assembly next year

Istanbul/New Delhi, Nov 26 (UNI) India is to host the 90th Interpol General Assembly in 2022 in New Delhi, as India’s candidate, Praveen Sinha, was elected as Delegate for Asia on the Executive Committee.

In a tweet, the Interpol or the International Criminal Police Organization, said: “From Turkey to India The #INTERPOLGA is held in a different location every year, and the 90th INTERPOL General Assembly will be held in New Delhi in 2022.”

On Thursday, in a tough-fought election, India’s candidate, Praveen Sinha, Special Director, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), was elected as Delegate for Asia on the Executive Committee of Interpol, beating tough competition from China and Singapore.

The new Executive Committee members held their first session on Thursday in Istanbul following the election.

“INTERPOL’s newly-elected Executive Committee members hold their first session following the #INTERPOLGA in Istanbul, Turkey,” it said in a tweet.

The Executive Committee, which oversees implementation of the Interpol General Assembly decisions, comprises of 13 members, which includes the President, three Vice Presidents, and nine Delegates. The Delegates represent Interpol’s four regions in the world.

The Interpol General Assembly elected Ahmed Nasser Al Raisi of the United Arab Emirates as the Organization’s new President.

Al Raisi was elected following three rounds of voting. Under Article 16 of INTERPOL’s Constitution, ‘a two-thirds majority shall be required for the election of the President; should this majority not be obtained after the second ballot, a simple majority shall suffice.’

In the final round Al Raisi received 68.9 per cent of votes cast by member countries.

As President, Al Raisi’s role during his four-year term will include chairing meetings of the Executive Committee which supervises the implementation of decisions taken at the General Assembly.

Secretary General Jürgen Stock, the Organization’s senior full-time official who oversees the day-to-day running of INTERPOL’s General Secretariat, welcomed Al Raisi’s appointment.

“For the past three years I have worked with Mr Al Raisi in his former role as Delegate on the Executive Committee. I look forward to working closely with him in ensuring that INTERPOL continues to fulfil its mandate and support international police cooperation.’

The President and other Executive Committee members are elected by the General Assembly on a ‘one country one vote’ basis, with each vote carrying equal weight.

The role of the President, which is part-time and unpaid, is to chair the General Assembly and three meetings of the Executive Committee each year.

The General Assembly was held in Turkey from November 23 – 25.

It meets once a year and takes all the major decisions affecting general policy, the resources needed for international cooperation, working methods, finances and programmes of activities. These decisions are in the form of resolutions.
