New Delhi, Aug 6 (UNI) The proceedings of the Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day on Friday after passing two important Bills–The Taxation Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2021 and The Central Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2021 by voice vote amid ruckus by the Opposition over various issues, including Pegasus snooping row and new farm laws.

Upon reassembling after the first adjournment at 1200 hrs, the Opposition Members, carrying placards, trooped into the Well of the House and started sloganeering over the issues.

Soon after the papers were laid on the table, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman moved the The Taxation Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2021 for consideration and passing.

The Bill seeks to withdraw tax demands made using a 2012 retrospective legislation to tax the indirect transfer of Indian assets.

It aims at amending the Income Tax Act of 1961 and the Finance Act of 2012 besides providing for the withdrawal of tax demand made on indirect transfer of Indian assets if the transaction was undertaken before May 28, 2012, the day the retrospective tax legislation came into being. It is also proposes to refund the amount paid in these cases without any interest thereon.

After the Union Finance Minister’s brief opening remarks on the Bill, amid din, it was passed by a voice vote without any discussion.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan then moved The Central Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2021 for consideration and passing.

Following the Minister’s brief opening remarks on the Bill, aimed at setting up of Central University in the Union Territory of Ladakh, was also passed by voice vote and without discussion amid the pandemonium.

After the passage of the two Bills, Rajendra Agarwal, who was in the chair, adjourned the House for the day.

The House will now meet on Monday.

Earlier in the day, the House proceedings were adjourned till 1200 hrs amid chaos.

Before taking up the Question Hour, Speaker Om Birla congratulated Ravi Kumar Dahiya for winning

silver medal in wrestling in the Tokyo Olympics on behalf of the House.

When the Question Hour commenced, the Opposition Members, carrying placards, rushed into the Well and started sloganeering.

Amid ruckus, Mr Birla conducted the Question Hour for nearly 20 minutes with repeated requests to the protesting members to resume their seats.

When they refused to relent, he adjourned the House till 1200 hrs.
