Despite 84-hour COVID-19 lockdown, Srinagar-Jammu highway open

Srinagar, Apr 30: Despite 84-hour COVID-19 lock down imposed by the authorities from Thursday evening, the Srinagar-Jammu national highway, the only all weather road linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, was through for traffic.

The Union Territory (UT) administration has imposed corona lockdown from 1900 hrs from Thursday and till 0700 hrs on Monday in Srinagar, Anantnag, Baramulla, Badgam, Kulgam, Pulwama and Ganderbal in the Kashmir valley.

One-way traffic also continued on the highway, the only road linking the Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh with Kashmir. However, the historic 86-km-long Mughal road, seen as alternative to Srinagar-Jammu national highway remained closed though snow clearance operation has been completed.

Only one-way fresh Light Motor Vehicle (LMV) traffic will ply from Jammu to Srinagar on Friday. However, Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMVs) stranded Nashree and Ramban will also ply towards Srinagar, traffic police official told UNI.

He said the Security forces were advised not to ply against the traffic advisory issued by the traffic department in view of traffic congestion on the highway, he said adding they may ply from Jammu towards Srinagar.

The Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region remained closed though snow has been cleared.

Spokesman said the Srinagar-Leh highway was also through. However, only vehicles carrying essentials were being allowed to ply from Srinagar towards UT Ladakh. Vehicles can ply from 0700 hrs till 1400 hrs, he said adding no vehicle will be allowed from opposite direction.
