COVID-19 cases in India rise by 46,951, biggest daily net jump yet

 

 

New Delhi, Mar 23:  India on Monday registered 46,951 fresh cases of COIVD-19, the highest single day jump in infections since November 12 last year.

With this, the total number of cases in India has now risen to 11,599,130 which is an increase of 0.4 per cent. The country also recorded 212 deaths taking the overall COVID fatality figures to 159,967 on Monday.

The five states which accounted for most of the fresh cases are Maharashtra 30,535, Punjab 2,644, Kerala 1,875, Karnataka 1,715, and Gujarat 1,580.

Overall, the five worst affected states in terms of total number of cases are Maharashtra 24,79,682, Kerala 11,04,228, Karnataka 9,70,202, Andhra Pradesh 8,93,734, and Tamil Nadu 8,66,982.

These latest COVID figures make India the eighth-most-affected country by way of active cases, fourth by numbers of fatality, third by the overall number of infections and second by way of number of recovered cases.

Overall the country now accounts for 1.57 per cent of all active cases globally, and 5.86 per cent of all COVID deaths worldwide.

India has also undertaken one of the biggest vaccination programme in the world in an effort to combat the spread of the coronavirus and has so far vaccinated 45,065,998 people, which is 386.97 per cent of its total caseload, and 3.2427 per cent of its population.

The states and union territories across India have fared differently in terms of handling the pandemic, with Rajasthan having vaccinated 42,88,901 people so far, Maharashtra 42,78,482, Uttar Pradesh 41,32,135, Gujarat 37,21,583, and West Bengal 36,49,705.

While the cases have been rising on the one hand India has also been registering record number of recoveries with 21,180 daily recoveries, taking the recovery rate to 95.75 per cent, while fatality rate has come down marginally to 1.37 per cent.
