Rajya Sabha adjourned for day amid uproar by Oppn over fuel price

New Delhi, Mar 8 :  The proceedings of the Rajya Sabha were adjourned for the day on Monday amid repeated disruptions by the Opposition Members demanding a discussion on increasing fuel price.

The Congress had given a notice under the Rule 267 to discuss the steep price hike of fuel, including that of domestic gas cylinder, which Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu rejected saying that the Members will get ample opportunity during the debate on the Appropriation Bill in the second part of the ongoing Budget Session 2021.

After the first adjournment when House resumed its business at 1300 hrs, Deputy Chairman Harivansh tried to placate the Opposition Member that the Chairman’s ruling cannot be revisited, the Opposition continued to argue against the ruling of disallowing suspension of business of the day to debate the rising fuel prices.

The House was adjourned till 1300 hrs amid uproar from Opposition benches, demanding the discussion on increasing fuel price.

It met briefly for 15 minutes when the functioning was again disrupted by the agitating Members who wanted to know the status of their demand.

After the House resumed, Vandana Chawan who was chairing the proceedings, announced that on the request of Members across the partylines, the Chairman has decided to commence the House proceedings from 1100 hrs to 1800 hrs from tomorrow and that all Members will be seated in the Rajya Sabha.
