Srinagar, August 6,: Srinagar Police have summoned People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Iltija Mufti to join an investigation after registering a case in connection with an alleged assault on a police officer during a protest led by PDP president Mehbooba Mufti in Srinagar earlier this week.
According to police, the incident occurred during a demonstration at S.K. Park on August 4, when PDP workers attempted to march towards Lal Chowk after authorities had denied permission for the protest. Police alleged that a section of the demonstrators tried to breach barricades and block Residency Road, resulting in a scuffle between protesters and security personnel.
During the altercation, police have alleged that Iltija Mufti assaulted a police officer on duty and bit his forearm, causing injuries. The officer was shifted to hospital, where he received medical treatment.
Following the incident, Police Station Kothibagh registered FIR No. 63/2026 and launched an investigation into the allegations. Police said Iltija Mufti has been directed to appear before the investigating officer on Thursday to join the probe.
Police also stated that the injured officer underwent treatment in accordance with medical protocols, including wound management and preventive care based on clinical assessment.
There was no immediate response from Iltija Mufti or the People’s Democratic Party to the police allegations. The claims made by police have not been independently verified, and the investigation is continuing.
The case stems from the August 4 protest organised by the PDP against the constitutional changes introduced in Jammu and Kashmir on August 5, 2019. Several political parties had planned demonstrations across the Valley, many of which were either restricted or prevented by the authorities.
PDP Says Iltija Mufti Undergoing Treatment After Protest, Alleges Police Assault
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday claimed that its leader Iltija Mufti is undergoing treatment at a Hospital in Srinagar after she was allegedly assaulted by police personnel during a protest demanding the restoration of Article 370.
PDP spokesperson said Iltija Mufti sustained injuries during the confrontation with police while participating in the party’s protest and is presently receiving medical care at the hospital.
The development comes a day after Srinagar Police registered FIR No. 63/2026 at Police Station Kothibagh in connection with the protest. Police have alleged that during the scuffle, Iltija Mufti assaulted a police officer and bit his forearm, causing injuries. She has since been summoned to join the investigation.
The PDP has contested the police version, alleging that excessive force was used against its workers during the protest and maintaining that Iltija Mufti was among those injured in the police action.
The incident occurred during a PDP demonstration in Srinagar against the abrogation of Article 370, after protesters allegedly attempted to march beyond the permitted area, leading to clashes with police. [KNT]
