Udhampur, July 24 : Flash floods triggered by incessant rains struck the Barkuanda area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur district in the early hours of Friday, damaging several houses and prompting authorities to evacuate affected families, officials said.

Officials told GNS that the sudden rise in water level due to heavy downpour caused panic in the area. The flash floods inundated homes and washed away belongings in low-lying pockets of Barkuanda.

“Several houses have suffered damage. As a precautionary measure, families residing in vulnerable areas were evacuated to safer places,” an official said.

Teams of police, SDRF and local administration rushed to the spot and launched rescue and relief operations. Damage assessment is underway.

No loss of life has been reported so far. Authorities have advised residents living near nallahs and flood-prone areas to remain alert in view of the ongoing rainfall. (GNS)
