Weather Expected to Improve After This Afternoon; Intermittent rain continues across Jammu and Kashmir

Meteorological Department Forecasts Fresh Wet Spell from July 28–30; Public Advised to Stay Alert and Follow Official Advisories

Srinagar, July 24: The Meteorological Centre Srinagar has said that the ongoing spell of intermittent rain across Jammu and Kashmir is expected to continue until this afternoon, after which weather conditions are likely to improve gradually. While brief spells of rain are expected over the next few days, the department has indicated that the overall weather situation is likely to become more stable before another wet spell is expected later this month.

According to the Meteorological Department, light to moderate rain or thundershowers are likely at many places across Jammu and Kashmir during the morning and afternoon today. Weather activity is expected to decrease gradually after the afternoon, although scattered showers may continue in some areas until the evening.

The department has forecast brief spells of rain or thundershowers at a few places from July 25 to July 27. A fresh wet spell is likely to affect Jammu and Kashmir between July 28 and July 30.

During the past 24 hours, Udhampur recorded the highest rainfall in the Union Territory at 96.5 mm, followed by Batote (84.2 mm), Ramban (69.5 mm), Bhaderwah (65.7 mm), Katra (45.1 mm), Kathua (44.8 mm), Doda (35.0 mm), Reasi (27.5 mm), Kishtwar (27.0 mm) and Jammu city (25.2 mm).

In the Kashmir Valley, Verinag received the highest rainfall at 45.6 mm, followed by Qazigund (40.2 mm), Kokernag (39.3 mm), Kulgam (28.4 mm), Pahalgam (25.4 mm), Batkoot (14.5 mm), Khudwani (14.0 mm), Sangam (13.0 mm), Pulwama (12.5 mm), Gulmarg (10.6 mm), Shopian (8.0 mm), Sonamarg and Babapora (7.0 mm each), Pampore (6.0 mm), Lolab (3.4 mm), Bumhama Kupwara (3.0 mm), Awantipora (2.2 mm), Baramulla (1.5 mm), Budgam (1.0 mm), while Srinagar, Srinagar Airport, Ganderbal and Kupwara recorded between 0.5 mm and 0.6 mm of rainfall. Several other stations recorded little or no rainfall.

The Meteorological Department said that although fresh rainfall has occurred in parts of South Kashmir since midnight, the water level of the River Jhelum has continued to recede, easing concerns over any major flood threat in the Kashmir Valley.

However, the department cautioned that isolated incidents of flash floods, landslides, mudslides and shooting stones cannot be ruled out, particularly in vulnerable hilly areas, if intense showers occur.

Authorities have advised the public to remain calm, avoid unnecessary travel to landslide-prone areas, follow official weather and traffic advisories, and exercise caution near rivers, streams and other vulnerable locations. The department expressed confidence that weather conditions are likely to improve gradually after this afternoon, while continuing to monitor the possibility of a fresh wet spell expected from July 28 onwards.
