No Flood Threat in Kashmir, Jhelum Water Level to Recede From Midnight: Chief Engineer

Srinagar: Chief Engineer, Irrigation and Flood Control Department, Showkat Hussain, on Thursday said there is no flood threat anywhere in Kashmir and urged the public not to panic or pay attention to rumours circulating on social media.

Speaking to KNT, Hussain said the water level in the Jhelum River remains below the alert mark and is expected to start receding from midnight as the ongoing rainfall weakens.

“There is absolutely no need to panic. There is no flood threat at present. The water level in the Jhelum is below the alert level and is likely to recede from midnight,” he said.

The Chief Engineer said southern Kashmir, which contributes significantly to the Jhelum’s inflow, has witnessed comparatively low rainfall during the current wet spell, ruling out the possibility of any flood situation.

“Southern parts of Kashmir have recorded the lowest rainfall, so there is no chance of flooding,” he said.

Appealing to the public to rely only on official information, Hussain advised people not to believe or circulate unverified messages regarding flood threats.  [KNT]
