
Switzerland secured a place in the FIFA World Cup quarterfinals after defeating Colombia in the last Round of 16 match. The contest was decided in a penalty shootout, with Switzerland winning 4-3.
Played in Vancouver, Switzerland had the better share of possession and created more attacking opportunities but failed to convert their chances into goals.
Colombia also searched for the breakthrough but was unable to capitalize on the opportunities that came their way.
The first half ended goalless, and neither side managed to score during the second half. With the match still level after regulation time, it went into extra time, but neither team could find the winner, forcing a penalty shootout.
In the shootout, Colombia converted three penalties, while Switzerland scored four, sealing a dramatic victory and booking a place in the quarterfinals, where they will face defending champions Argentina.
