Jammu Introduces Automated Road Repair Model Yet to Reach Srinagar

Jammu, June 12,: Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) has rolled out a technology-driven road maintenance system that combines artificial intelligence-powered surveillance with a semi-automated pothole repair machine, enabling authorities to identify road defects and carry out repairs within hours.
The initiative, which is yet to be introduced in Srinagar, uses cameras installed on garbage collection vehicles to automatically detect potholes and a range of other civic issues across the city.
JMC Commissioner Devansh Yadav said the corporation has equipped 10 vehicles with cameras that continuously monitor roads and public spaces. The footage is analyzed using artificial intelligence tools capable of identifying potholes and nearly 22 categories of civic deficiencies.
According to Yadav, the system can also detect roadside garbage accumulation, ongoing construction activities, fallen utility poles and streetlights that remain switched on during daylight hours.
The technology is intended to reduce dependence on manual inspections and complaints by automatically generating actionable information for civic agencies.
The initiative is supported by a newly introduced semi-automated pothole patching machine that uses cold-mix technology to permanently repair damaged road surfaces.
Yadav said the machine is designed to respond quickly to identified defects, with repair teams expected to reach locations within 24 hours of detection.
“It takes us about five to ten minutes to repair a single pothole. If there are multiple potholes reported from a location, they can be repaired within a few hours,” he said.
He said the technology is best suited for localized road damage and routine maintenance rather than roads requiring complete reconstruction.
The deployment marks a shift toward data-driven urban management in Jammu, where civic authorities are increasingly relying on technology to improve service delivery and infrastructure maintenance. [KNT]
