
New Delhi, May 9: The Government of India on Saturday announced key appointments in the armed forces, naming N. S. Raja Subramaniam (R) as the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) and Krishna Swaminathan as the new Chief of the Naval Staff.
According to the Ministry of Defence, Lt Gen Raja Subramaniam (Retd) will succeed Anil Chauhan, whose tenure ends on May 30. Vice Admiral Swaminathan will take over from Dinesh K. Tripathi, who is scheduled to retire on May 31.
Lt Gen Subramaniam will also serve as Secretary of the Department of Military Affairs. His appointment will come into effect from the date he assumes office and will continue until further orders.
He has been serving as Military Adviser at the National Security Council Secretariat since September 1, 2025. Earlier, he held the post of Vice Chief of the Army Staff from July 2024 to July 2025 and served as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Central Command from March 2023 to June 2024.
Vice Admiral Swaminathan assumed charge as the 34th Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command on July 31, 2025.
