Srinagar,: Counting of votes for the 2026 Assembly elections in five Indian states is underway, with the latest trends indicating major political shifts and intense contests across regions. As per early and mid-stage trends, the Bharatiya Janata Party has taken a strong lead in Assam and West Bengal, while a major upset is unfolding in Tamil Nadu where Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam is emerging as the frontrunner. In Kerala, the Congress-led alliance is currently ahead.
According to available trends from the Election Commission of India and media reports:
West Bengal (294 seats)
The BJP has crossed the 100-seat mark in early trends and is maintaining a clear edge over the ruling All India Trinamool Congress. Several constituencies are witnessing close contests, but the overall momentum appears to favor the BJP.
Assam (126 seats)
In Assam, the BJP-led alliance is on track to form the government for a third consecutive term, holding a comfortable lead in the ongoing counting.
Kerala (140 seats)
The United Democratic Front, led by Congress, is ahead of the Left Democratic Front, indicating a possible break from the state’s traditional alternating power pattern.
Tamil Nadu (234 seats)
A major political upset is visible in Tamil Nadu, where Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, is leading in over 100 seats. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has slipped to third position in early trends.
Puducherry (30 seats)
The NDA alliance is leading in Puducherry and appears poised to form the next government.
