Srinagar protest: PDP rallies against Urdu exclusion, Iltija Mufti leads march

Srinagar, April 28,: The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday staged a protest in Srinagar against recent changes related to the use of Urdu in Jammu and Kashmir, with party leader Iltija Mufti leading the demonstration.
Carrying placards and raising slogans, PDP workers and supporters assembled in the city to voice opposition to what they termed as the “exclusion” of Urdu from official processes. The protestors held banners with messages emphasizing the cultural and administrative significance of the language.
Iltija Mufti, who led the march, was seen interacting with participants and holding placards during the protest, as the party sought to highlight concerns over language and identity.
The demonstration comes amid a growing political debate following changes in recruitment rules, where Urdu has been made non-mandatory for certain government positions, triggering reactions from opposition parties.
Iltija Mufti said Urdu has historically served as a key administrative language in Jammu and Kashmir and should not be diluted in official frameworks. She called for the restoration of its earlier status in recruitment and governance-related procedures.
The PDP has been consistently raising the issue, linking it to broader questions of cultural preservation and administrative continuity in the region. [KNT]
