Jammu, Mar 27: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators on Friday staged a protest inside the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, demanding the establishment of a National Law University (NLU) in Jammu as the second phase of the Budget Session commenced.
The BJP MLAs, per news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), raised slogans while seeking clarity from the government on the proposed location of the university. They said Jammu has long been deprived of premier educational institutions and called for an immediate decision.
The legislators held placards inside the House and continued sloganeering as the proceedings began, briefly disrupting normal business.
The second leg of the Assembly’s Budget session opened amid protests, with opposition parties expected to corner the government over its poll promises, regional concerns and the issue of restoration of statehood.
Officials said the second part of the session will be held across March and April, with four sittings scheduled in March and five in April.
NC lawmakers protest in Assembly over US-Israel war on Iran
Ruling National Conference (JKNC) legislators on Friday staged a protest inside the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly against the US-Israel war on Iran as the House convened for the ongoing Budget Session.
The lawmakers, per news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), raised slogans, condemning the strikes on Iran and calling them a violation of international norms and an act of aggression.
The legislators also held placards and briefly disrupted proceedings, demanding that the issue be acknowledged and discussed.They stated that the developments have hurt public sentiment in the region.
Congress MLA stages protest outside Assembly over attack on Iran
Congress MLA Irfan Hafiz Lone on Friday staged a protest outside the Assembly complex here, condemning the attack on Iran and criticizing the Union Government’s response to it.
The protest, as per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), was held before proceedings of the House began. Lone raised slogans and accused the Government of India of maintaining silence over the situation in the Middle East.
He said the attack on Iran amounted to “murder of humanity” and asserted that India has historically stood with sovereign nations facing aggression. He alleged that the Centre’s silence was being widely questioned and claimed it created an impression that it had “compromised.”
The Congress legislator said donations made by Kashmiris for Iran reflect humanitarian values.
Assembly adjourned for 30 minutes after ruckus over Iran war
The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly witnessed chaotic scenes on Friday, leading to an adjournment of the House for 30 minutes amid protests and counter-slogans by members.
The ruckus began after National Conference (NC) legislators raised slogans against the US-Israel war on Iran and waved posters of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei inside the House.
BJP members, per news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), strongly objected to the display of posters and countered with slogans, triggering a heated exchange between the two sides.
Amid the uproar, Congress MLA Irfan Hafeez Lone and BJP legislator Yudhvir Sethi were seen in a verbal confrontation that nearly escalated into a physical altercation before other members intervened.
As the situation turned disorderly, the Speaker adjourned the proceedings for 30 minutes—(KNO)
